Power of Play

When was the last time you really took the time to kick back, think, and play?

When was the last time you did something for yourself and had FUN?

Playing can mean something different to each person and as an adult, our society sometimes examines it like wasted time or not worthwhile, but there is real value in allowing yourself to have time each day to be carefree, creative and challenge yourself physically and/or mentally in a new way. It could also meantime where you can build relationships with your kids, spouse or friends.

Do you know a playful attitude can also help you in your weight loss journey? As a health coach, I see the “aha” moment when a client recognizes the attitude or thoughts they have been telling themselves about nutrition, exercise and other aspects of their life. The lightbulb goes off when they realize they have been looking at exercise as a chore or nutrition as “diet” food instead of finding a playful attitude about the things they want to incorporate in their healthy lifestyle.

A playful attitude for exercise may enrich your experience and tap into internal motivation. Do you like to dance? Do you like to challenge yourself physically in a workout that you didn’t think you could first accomplish? What is the fun factor for you? Learning to play and moving your body can be a “win-win” situation.

A playful attitude for your daily food may be experimenting with new ways to cook or new veggies you have never had before. Have fun with themed dinners or a new cooking device or tool in the kitchen. If you have kids, renaming foods like calling broccoli “trees”, using cookie cutters or making pictures out of snacks can add the fun factor to food. Spices also can add variety and fun to your meals.

Play can go beyond diet and exercise as well. What do you do for a hobby or interest? Do you have an activity where you feel energized or a “flow” where all time and space disappear? Rethink your time in front of the tv where you zone out and find something which engages your mind and body and enriches your life in your free time. A playful attitude can mean a mind-body connection where you find a deeper sense of wellness and happiness in your life.

What activity is fun and exciting for you? What is something you’ve always wanted to try?

Make time for adventure and fun!
