Where Do You Begin When Trying to Lose Weight?

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed you don’t know where to begin on your weight loss journey? You have tried so hard in the past with numerous diets or exercise programs, giving yourself an ultimatum that tomorrow is going to be different and you’re going to change everything. Yet you find yourself in exactly the same place as before?

You’re not alone. Most of the clients I meet with as a health coach feel the same way and looking for real answers. There are so many choices we have available to us these days to help us on our health journey which can often lead to decision paralysis. You end up not knowing what the best choice is for you. You get lost in conflicting information on social media and other sources. You freeze and stay the same because of uncertainty.

So where DO you begin?


Simply wherever you are confident and ready to make a change.

Start out with something small you feel you can tackle in your life today. For some of my clients, their first goal in their weight loss journey is to go get their health numbers and see a doctor. Others it is drinking more water by adding one extra glass a day to what they are already consuming or eating a veggie at every dinner. Perhaps it is getting the old running shoes out of the closet and setting them by the front door. Keep it simple and small and give yourself two or three viable choices. Build on success over time.

Here are a few other things to consider:

Brainstorm and plan on how to overcome barriers and challenges you see standing in your way of losing weight.

What kind of support system or environment do you need to be successful? Some thrive on being a part of a fitness community while others enjoy working out at home with a video. Maybe it’s time to clean out the pantry and not bring unwanted foods into the house on a regular basis. Plan ahead and envision the steps that will help you map out success.

Consider a playful attitude where you try out something new for a week or a few weeks. If it doesn’t work, try something new!

Work with a health coach to examine the bigger picture and brainstorm as to what is really going to work in your life.
